Kaneki is an ordinary, bookish, introverted college student until an accident turns him into a half-ghoul. He's now neither fully human nor fully monster; the entire tragedy of the series grows from his belonging to neither world.
Character traits
Gentle, timid and accommodating at first; but the torture and losses he endures transform him, step by step, into someone else. His hair turning white is the visual symbol of that break — the innocent Kaneki dies, and someone hardened to survive is born.
His struggle isn't for power but for how much of his humanity he can keep.
Role in the story
Kaneki is the walking form of the series' "monster or man?" question. When he's forced to choose inflicting pain to avoid suffering it, the viewer witnesses how an innocent youth becomes a warrior.
He's a character who shows identity isn't fixed but fragile and shifting.
