Juuzou is one of the series' most disturbing and fascinating characters. Raised by a ghoul like a "pet" to be numb to pain, for him violence is a game and pain a familiarity.
Character traits
Cheerful, childlike, yet a terrifyingly merciless fighter. He uses even his own body with careless disregard. Beneath this "abnormal" behavior lies the tragedy of someone who never had a healthy childhood.
Beginning to learn human bonds over time through a mentor (Shinohara) pulls his character from a monster toward a human.
Role in the story
Juuzou is an extreme example of the series' theme of "how trauma shapes a person." That a ghoul's victim becomes a ghoul hunter is the bitter irony of the cycle. His slow humanization is one of the series' rare sparks of hope.
He implies that even the most broken can heal.
